Career paths are divided into three categories: science, engineering, and tactical. Each category will be further divided into specialized subcategories, but these have not yet been revealed. The specialty a player chooses will determine their skills, and also priorities. Some players will be better equipped to handle on-ship operations, while alternate branches of the same field will specialize in away missions.

All paths will lead to command if a player is willing to invest skill points in leadership instead of further specializing within their department.
