Command officers are usually specialists who have proven with extraordinary ability and leadership qualities, capable of commanding their department. These lieutenants, often members of the senior staff, are responsible for running the day to day operations on board the ship. A department chief works with relative autonomy. They guide less experienced staff, and direct research operations.

Command officers will have access to medium sized vessels, and some ships of older design. They may also be able to access smaller warships.
