Nova class Starships are the most advanced science research ships in the fleet. They are designed for short term, planetary research and survey. Their relatively slow speed—they are only capable of warp 8—and small size makes them unsuitable for long range missions. Although they are sufficiently armed for defense, the Nova class ships are not designed for battle and can be quickly overwhelmed by advanced combat ships.
